“STRATEGIC PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT: TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES FOR CAREER ADVANCEMENT”
In today’s fast-changing business landscape, the ability to communicate effectively, think strategically, and navigate professional challenges has become more critical than ever. In response to this need, National Cheng Kung University Overseas Hub in Vietnam (NCKU OH) hosted a Workshop titled “Strategic Personal Development: Tools and Techniques for Career Advancement” on August 15th, 2025. Bringing together academia-industry experts from NCKU, Asia Commercial Bank, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), and PEAPROS Consulting, the event is designed to strengthen the connection between academia and industry, equip participants with practical skills for career success, deepen their understanding of business communication and strategy, while providing valuable networking opportunities through interactive sessions and discussions.

The Workshop commenced with warm and engaging Opening Remarks moderated by Dr. Ngo Thi Minh Hien, Director of NCKU Overseas Hub in Vietnam. Dr. Minh Hien welcomed distinguished Speakers, Institutional partners, and participants joining via Webex Cisco and Facebook Livestream. Subsequently, she highlighted the primary objectives of the Workshop: to bridge academic and professional sectors, strengthen ties between NCKU and Vietnamese Institutions, and deliver practical knowledge for career success. In addition, she emphasized the importance of personal development in today’s rapidly evolving professional landscape and invited participants to make full use of the shared insights.

Following the opening session, Leslie Tsai, CEO of Atelier Future, NCKU, delivered a compelling presentation on “Sustainable Leadership: Integrating Personal Values and Professional Growth”. The Speaker emphasized how aligning personal values with professional objectives contributes to more sustainable leadership. Leslie firstly brought to the table the thought-provoking dilemma “Have you ever asked yourself: what kind of person do I want to be at work—not just what job I want?”. To further solve the puzzle, the presenter went on to the point of defining sustainable leadership, where the three points were provided to assist in conceptualizing. Further toolkits to evaluate the impact of actions and to grow with purpose were also given. The session provided actionable strategies for cultivating self-awareness, maintaining integrity, and fostering leadership resilience in the workplace.

The Workshop continued with an insightful presentation by Ms. Vo Thuy Ngoc, Competency Development Manager, Asia Commercial Bank, on “Effective Networking and Relationship Building.” After briefly introducing the importance of networking and relationship building, Ms. Ngoc shared the definition of networking and how to build it using the mindset TRUST and skill set GIVE. After explaining the concept, Ms. Ngoc elaborated on practical actions to establish meaningful professional relationships, maintain professional connections, and leverage networking opportunities for career advancement using 3Cs: Communication, Commitment and Compromise, followed by three simple steps: Set a goal, Practice and Follow up. Lastly, she reminds participants to keep practicing and networking using the aforementioned strategies to expand the network. Her talk resonated strongly with early-career professionals and students seeking to expand their professional horizons.

Next, Mr. Nguyen Duc Trung, Principle Consultant, PEAPROS Consulting, captivated participants with his session on “Communicate Your Ideas More Clearly and Effectively with Visual Thinking” where he gave an engaging presentation on the concept of Visual Thinking and its practical applications. He introduced the audience to the idea of using visual language—shapes, nodes, and links as a grammar for expressing complex ideas. Drawing inspiration from Tom Wujec’s method, he demonstrated how simple exercises, such as explaining “how to make a cup of instant coffee,” can help participants practice breaking down problems into clear and structured visuals. Mr. Trung emphasized that visual thinking is not only a tool for communication but also a powerful method for analyzing processes, identifying relationships, and fostering creativity in problem-solving. His talk inspired attendees to apply visual frameworks in their studies and future careers, enabling them to think more critically and communicate more effectively.

Last but not least, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Nam, Lecturer, School of International Business – Marketing, College of Business, UEH, delivered an in-depth presentation on Career Planning and Development through the Jobcat Framework. He introduced the concept of employee value proposition and the “3B” strategy in talent management, focusing on buying, borrowing, and building talents. Mr. Nam explained how the Jobcat Framework categorizes careers into families, bands, and levels, providing employees with a clear pathway for professional growth. Using real examples, he illustrated career paths for both management and professional tracks, highlighting how employees could strategically plan their journey from entry-level positions to leadership roles. His presentation emphasized that career is a continuous journey, and with proper planning and skill development, individuals can successfully navigate their professional aspirations.
Mr. Nguyen Quoc Nam from the School of International Business – Marketing, UEH shared “Career Development Model Applied at Techcombank” with a virtual audience.
The event culminated in an interactive Panel Discussion and Closing Remarks, where participants and Speakers engaged in open dialogue on the presented topics. This closing session served as a reflective moment, inspiring participants to actively deepen their understanding and apply the knowledge gained throughout the Workshop to advance their career aspirations.
The Workshop achieved a global reach of nearly 1,677 views across Facebook Livestream and Webex Cisco. Participants from 13 countries, including Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia, United Kingdom, Paraguay, Australia, South Africa, Ghana, and Kenya, demonstrated the event's widespread appeal.
