Webinar “Transforming Healthcare Through Digital Solutions
and Interdisciplinary Collaboration”
NCKU Overseas Week is an established annual event collaboratively organized by the three National Cheng Kung University Overseas Hubs located in Southeast Asia, encompassing Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia. This year, three sister Hubs collaborated to hold the 2025 NCKU Overseas Week, which takes place from December 2nd to December 4th. The event was meticulously designed as a dynamic and high-engagement platform specifically aimed at facilitating the comprehensive exchange of cutting-edge knowledge.
National Cheng Kung University Overseas Hub in Vietnam (NCKU OH) is the first Hub to officially launch the 2025 NCKU Overseas Week. Its flagship Webinar, themed “Transforming Healthcare Through Digital Solutions and Interdisciplinary Collaboration”, was meticulously designed to promote interdisciplinary dialogue and critical knowledge exchange in the field of digital health. The comprehensive program explored exactly how emerging digital technologies are fundamentally restructuring healthcare service delivery, management systems, and medical education, thereby actively cultivating the crucial cross-sector collaboration required for sustainable transformation within the healthcare ecosystem.

The event featured the participation of the following distinguished speakers: Prof. Hui-Ching Weng, Director, Institute of Allied Health Science, Chief, Department of Medical Humanities and Social Medicine, College of Medicine, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU); Prof. Mei-Feng Lin, Department of Nursing, College of Medicine, NCKU; Assoc. Prof. Pham Thi Thu Hien, Head, Biomedical Photonics Lab Chair, Dept. of Medical Instrumentation, School of Biomedical Engineering, International University - Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCMC); MD. The Workshop successfully gathered a dynamic and diverse group of participants, including students, young professionals, university staff, and industry representatives from various backgrounds and regions, featuring a diverse demographic profile: 28% University Staff, 25% Undergraduate Students, 25% Graduate Students, 7% Hospital, 6% Freelancers, 5% Industry, 3% Government, and 1% High school Student. This diverse participation highlighted the growing interest in practical business knowledge and career development skills, while also strengthening the role of NCKU as a key connector for interdisciplinary collaboration.

At the opening remarks, Dr. Minh Hien warmly welcomed the distinguished speakers, institutional partners, and participants joining via Webex Cisco and Fazcebook Livestream. In her remarks, Dr. Minh Hien highlighted the main objectives of the Webinar - to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and knowledge exchange in the field of digital health.
Dr. Minh Hien specifically emphasized that the powerful and swift emergence of digital technologies is not merely a trend but a fundamental force that is reshaping the entire healthcare ecosystem, encompassing everything from service delivery methods and hospital management to medical education and training. She clearly stated that the integration of technology does not just offer convenience but is a key factor in achieving more precise and personalized patient care.

Following the opening session, Prof. Mei-Feng Lin from the Department of Nursing, College of Medicine, NCKU, delivered a crucial presentation titled “Depression Detection via the AI-driven Model with facial and verbal features.” The research focused on the development of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system capable of screening and detecting depressive symptoms through the analysis of both facial expressions and verbal/semantic cues.

The Workshop continued with an insightful presentation by Prof. Hui-Ching Weng, Director of the Institute of Allied Health Science and Chief of the Department of Medical Humanities and Social Medicine, College of Medicine, NCKU, on the topic “Beyond the Gaze: Pupil-GSR Synchrony as a Novel Psychophysiological Indicator of Early Cognitive Decline”. Prof. Weng introduced an innovative approach combining pupil response and galvanic skin response (GSR) to identify early signs of cognitive impairment. The research highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between neuroscience and digital health technologies.

Next, Assoc. Prof. Pham Thi Thu Hien, Head of the Biomedical Photonics Lab, Chair of the Department of Medical Instrumentation, School of Biomedical Engineering, International University (VNU-HCMC) captivated participants with his session on “AI-Powered Medical Imaging: Intelligent Solutions for Precision and Efficiency in Healthcare”. Prof. Thu Hien’ presentation focused on how artificial intelligence can improve image-based diagnostics, streamline workflows, and support clinical decision-making in radiology.

Assoc. Last but not least, MD. Ph.D. Trinh Hoang Kim Tu, Head of the Allergy-Immunology Research Group, Center for Molecular Biomedicine, UMP, delivered an in-depth presentation on “Building Predictive Models for Anaphylaxis: From Data to Clinical Action”, provided a comprehensive overview of the immunopathology of anaphylaxis, its epidemiological patterns in Vietnam, and the emerging role of multi-layered data and artificial intelligence (AI) in predicting severe allergic reactions. Dr. Tu’s lecture emphasized the clinical necessity of early prediction for a condition traditionally regarded as “unpredictable,” with the overarching aim of translating complex datasets into actionable clinical insights to enhance patient safety.

The discussions not only deepened understanding of how digital healthcare is reshaping healthcare but also demonstrated the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration across medicine, engineering, and data science. Through this dialogue, participants gained valuable insights into current challenges - such as data ethics, system interoperability, and clinical integration - while exploring practical pathways to transform innovation into real-world medical impact.
Beyond knowledge sharing, the event reaffirmed the vision of NCKU to serve as a catalyst for global collaboration and academic excellence in the digital health ecosystem. By connecting experts, researchers, and institutions from Vietnam, Taiwan, and beyond, NCKU OH in Vietnam strengthened its role as a regional hub for innovation and education. The success of this Webinar laid a solid foundation for future partnerships, joint research initiatives, and sustainable growth in digital healthcare transformation across Asia and the world.
The Webinar, titled “Transforming Healthcare Through Digital Solutions and Interdisciplinary Collaboration”, and held as part of the NCKU Overseas Week 2025, successfully concluded after an intensive session spanning nearly three hours, which effectively accommodated a high volume of participant inquiries during the extended Q&A segment. The Webinar demonstrated a remarkable global reach, attracting 1,029 views across the widely utilized Facebook Livestream and Webex Cisco platforms. Attesting further to the widespread appeal and interdisciplinary relevance of the topic, the event attracted committed engagement from participants representing 14 distinct countries. These nations included Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, the United States, Cambodia, Pakistan, Indonesia, Nigeria, Singapore, Japan, the Netherlands, and Australia. This exceptional geographical diversity unequivocally confirmed the event’s status as a significant international academic forum in the dynamic field of Digital Health.
