“2021 NCKU – TUDa – UEH DIGITAL BUSINESS WORKSHOP”

In the current 4.0 technology era, all issues are "digitized" to bring the fastest and most convenient to everyone. Digital Business is an indispensable solution for businesses today. Especially, through the COVID-19 pandemic, the important role of Digital Business is obviously recognized. This is a huge global transformation ever and this will open a new way of business operation.

The National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) always endorses the latest trends, with the mission of spreading knowledge and furthering connections with other countries in the world. NCKU works as a “golden bridge” to connect Southeast Asia, Europe, and other areas together, to create values, and to contribute to society. With the purpose of helping people gain an overview of the hot tendency in 2021 as well as strengthen the international collaboration with NCKU and NCKU’s partners, NCKU Overseas Hub in Vietnam (NCKU OH) decided to organize the Event: "2021 NCKU - TUDa - UEH Digital Business Workshop" on August 24th, 2021 with the presentations of the Speakers from the top Universities in Germany, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

In this Workshop, all participants will be exposed to the latest economic trends, and recent successful case studies will be presented. This event is honored to have the presence of the following well-known economic professors:  Prof. Volker Nitsch – International Economics, Technical University of Darmstadt (TUDa), Germany whose presentation is titled “Digital Business: Insights from Economics”; Dr. Do Thi Hai Ninh – School of International Business–Marketing, University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH), Vietnam whose presentation is titled “Digital transformation: Case Study of Vietnam Market”; and Prof. Wei-Tsong Wang – Department of Industrial and Information Management, NCKU, Taiwan whose presentation is titled “Overview of Digital Transformation.”

Beside the presence of honor speakers, this Workshop was pleasure to have the delegate guests from UEH: Associate Professor Bui Thanh Trang, Dean of School of International Business – Marketing; Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Thu, Vice Dean of School of International Business – Marketing; and Dr. Hoang Cuu Long, Vice Dean of School of International Business – Marketing. An extremely special point of this Event is that NCKU OH will provide the certificates which are authenticated by three Institutions are TUDa, UEH and NCKU to all participants.

Then, Dr. Minh Hien - Director of NCKU OH sent the thankfulness to all the Speakers and participants had accompanied with NCKU OH in this Workshop as well as hoped that the participants will be updated with the latest Economic trends, and the case studies that have brought about success will be provided through this Workshop by many valuable sessions and experienced from Speakers.

Fortunately, this Event: “2021 NCKU-TUDa-UEH Digital Business Workshop” has attracted nearly 170 participants from the world such as Vietnam, Malaysia Philippines, Taiwan, and other countries: Germany, Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, Jordan, etc. with many different occupations as Students, University Staff, University Faculty, Industry and Government. This is such an amazing number. Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines reached the majority of the number of people who register a form, all thanks to the support of partners like UEH and NCKU OH in Malaysia who promoted this Workshop through website and email. Besides that, this Workshop also received huge interest from other countries in Asia, Europe, America is clearly evidence of the efforts to bring NCKU closer to everyone and every country.

Students took the highest proportion of participants (58%), furthermore, people belonging from the University staff (32%), Industry and even Government had been recorded as a considerable amount.

This Workshop officially started with the first speech from Prof. Volker Nitsch entitled: “Digital Business: Insights from Economics”. He introduced about the benefits of Digitization reducing economic costs as: Search costs: costs of gathering information (reduces prices, price dispersion, etc.); Reproduction costs: non-rival goods, Transportation costs: costs of transporting information (lowers the role of distance), Tracking costs: digital activity is easily recorded and stored (enables personalization), Verification costs: costs of verifying identity and reputation (asymmetric information). That resulted in the price of products sold on the Internet average 9-16% less than the identical items sold via conventional channels. The Internet was the potential market to increase the share of niche products.

The Workshop continuously took place with the presentation of Dr. Do Thi Hai Ninh with the Topic: “Digital Transformation: Case study of Vietnam market”. Dr. Ninh shared to all viewers and participants about Digital transformation overviews and how Digital Business and E-commerce become popular in Vietnam. Transformations are comprehensive changes in strategy, operating model, organization, people, and processes. They aim to achieve a dramatic improvement in performance and alter a company's future trajectory. Thanks to Digital Business, customer’s experience was focused and put as an aim for enterprises to make effort to bring the best service experience. In addition, Business could fully understand the customer’s needs, gap, behavior & attitude are the source of brand & growth. Especially, E-commerce became common in the Vietnam market 10 years ago with the presence of E-commerce platform such as Tiki, Shopee, Lazada, etc. And they created new shopping routines for people in general and the younger generation in particular. Customers could find it very easy to purchase anything and products would be delivered at their home, even merchants in the Northside and customers in the Southside. Moreover, Dr. Ninh had pointed out some drawbacks of digital transformation in Vietnam that need to be improved like problems with quality of connection, policy and rules were undeveloped, problems in logistic policy, supply chain synchronization and need government support/built trust. The good news is that Vietnam adopted Cyber security law on January 1st, 2019.

And the last session that day was shared from Prof. Wei-Tsong Wang with the title: “Overview of Digital Transformation”. In his presentation, Prof. Wang guided people to have an in-depth look at the core of Digital Business and E-commerce through providing definitions. Besides that, he also introduced many strategies, key factors, trajectories that make a huge impact on the success of Digital Transformation. He also gave some advice about how to manage and analyze customers’ data and get valuable information to improve business systems. He also emphasized that high-quality human resources were the key factor for the success of digital business as manager of IT.

Although the duration of this Workshop is long, a lot of the participants and viewers stayed until the last minute to join in the Panel discussion. Many interesting questions from both FB and Cisco platforms were given for Speakers to know their opinions. Most of the questions focus on the chance and challenge of digital transformation, the effect of covid-19 pandemic on digital transformation, the distribution between traditional business and digital business, the risky of digital business and solutions, the preparation to overcome the tough situation for freight forwarders and logistic provider or even Covid-19 digital passport. The speakers candidly shared their views, giving appropriate advice and solutions to all viewers.

The intended duration of this Workshop will be arranged in 2.5 hours. NCKU OH hopes all viewers and participants will gain much constructive information about Digital Business and E-commerce, especially this will provide everyone many key factors to catch up with the new tendency and increase income in the pandemic period. We do hope NCKU Overseas Hub’s future activities have always received support from everyone.

Some outstanding results of this Workshop:

  • Vietnam Hub got the huge attention from viewers and participants in both Cisco Webex platform and FB page.
  • On Cisco Webex, we had 53 participants
  • On FB, our video livestream reached 439 people and got 280 views in less than 24 hours. Not only in Vietnam and Taiwan, our video was affected by the amount viewers from other countries such as Malaysia, Philippines, Canada, France, Germany, Thailand and Indonesia.
  • Enhance the interaction between NCKU and other Institutions in Europe and Southeast Asia
