The Obesity Awareness Week 2022 was held from March 28th to April 1st, 2022 to raise public awareness and to improve the understanding of obesity and obesity-related diseases. This fully virtual event was jointly organized by the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Overseas Hub in Malaysia, Malaysia Research University Network (MRUN) “Linking obesity to cancer: an integrative study from molecule to society” program and Universiti Malaya (UM) Pharmacy Society. The 5-days event consisted of a series of webinars, scientific poster presentations, and other activities.
The opening ceremony of the Obesity Awareness Week 2022 started with the welcoming remarks by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ivy Chung as the Vice Director of NCKU Overseas Hub in Malaysia and Program Leader of MRUN. The event was officiated by Prof. Dr. April Camilla Roslani which is the Dean of Faculty of Medicine, UM. This event was sponsored by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia (TECO) and Hospimetrix Sdn. Bhd. The National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF) also supported the event by being a collaborator in the Virtual 10,000 Steps Challenge.

The Scientific Poster Presentation session has attracted the participations of 16 representatives from Malaysia’s public and private universities, and 1 representative from Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia. The Best Poster Award was given to the three best posters presented at the session. The winners are: Miss Dayang Mastura Adenan (UM, Malaysia - 1st prize), Miss Nurul Amniyyah Azhar (UM, Malaysia - 2nd prize) and Mr. Wan Muhd. Farhan Syafiq (UM, Malaysia - 3rd prize). The attendees were also allowed to cast their votes for the People’s Choice Best Poster Award. The award was presented to Miss Ruth Naomi (UPM, Malaysia).
The Virtual 10,000 Steps Challenge received an overwhelming response with 167 registered participants (UM staffs and students). Among the participants, 85 individuals have completed the 10,000 steps within the required period. The winners of the highest cumulative steps in one week are: Mr. Abdul Rafique bin Abd Jalal (1st prize), Mdm. Siti Juryiah binti Mohd Khalid (2nd prize), and Mr. Sia Kim Juan (3rd prize). The winner of the highest cumulative steps in one day was Mdm. Salimizawati Salim.
The Stay Fit, Stay Healthy, Say No to Obesity TikTok Challenge received 6 participations and was won by Nur Sofia (1st prize) and Muhammad Zulhafiz (2nd prize).
